Enjoy drought tolerent indoor plants all year

Most planters include a Mother of Thousands or Mexican Hat Plant among other perennial succulents. Each planter was been upcycled from a local non-profit thrift store or from my own collection of wine bottles. Plants and planters cannot be shipped. Purchases will be for pick up only.

What are Mexican Hat Plants?

This plant has many names: Mexican Hat Plant, Mother of Thousands, Devil’s Backbone or Alligator Plants. Regardless of what you wish to call it, these plants are sub-tropical succulents, native to Madagascar. The leaves will grow small plantlets (see pictures below) on the edges and then these plantlets will sprout roots. When they are ready, the plantlets will drop into the soil and root new plants. Alternatively, you can gently pick off the plantlets and place them in any planter of your choice. This plant is hardy in zones 9, 10, and 11 only. It is not frost tolerant and in Canada they should be a houseplant. These plants can get as tall as 3 1/2 feet and can spread to 24 inches across from leaf tip to leaf tip. They will occasionally flower, but in my 10 years of having these plants, it has only happened to one plant, one time! So don’t hold your breath! They will need to be planted in larger pots as they grow.

Growing conditions are best with morning light and filtered afternoon light. Direct, full-sun afternoons may be too much! As for watering, generally a water every 7-20 days is great. This will depend on the time of the year, size of the planter, and where the plant is located in your house. If the top inch of soil is dry to the touch, give it some water. If it’s a small planter it will dry out much faster than a large planter. If it is located in a sunny window, it will dry out faster. During the winter, you can spread out the watering to closer to the 21 day mark. If you have theses plants in a sunny location they will tend to lean toward the sun, turning them every couple weeks will keep the stems strong.
